Rumor: Next Xbox doesn’t contain a disc drive?

No Disc Drive?

According to a report on MCV, the next evolution of the Xbox won’t feature a physical disc drive, instead opting to go “with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage, although it is not known whether this will be proprietary or a more standard format such as SD.”

The report then goes on to claim that a 2013 release window for the console has been confirmed and a reveal at this years E3 conference is not out of the question. Following the article Microsoft offered the following statement to MCV:

“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Beyond that we do not comment on rumors or speculation.”

So what does this mean? Could Microsoft be leaning towards games that are delivered more like they are on the PS Vita? Digital Distribution? How about backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 games? It’s an interesting report, if true, this years E3 could be one of the biggest yet.
