Mod Tech Top 10 – Game of Thrones Season 1 Moments

With the season 2 premiere of Game of Thrones just 1 day away I thought I would go through my Top 10 moments from season 1.

10. Opening Scene: Episode 1

The show kicked off with a great introduction to the men of the Night’s Watch, out on a ranging tracking wildlings, only to find themselves being hunted by the White Walkers. The blue eyes of the White Walkers were exactly as creepy as they should’ve been and set these supernatural beings up as a threat as the story goes on.

9. Bran’s Attempted Assassination

Following being thrown from the tower window in episode 1, Bran is laying unconcious in his bed when as assassin comes calling. Catelyn Stark tries her best to save her son’s life, getting cut to the bone on her hands by holding onto the dagger of the assassin. Bran’s direwolf comes to the rescue and tears the throat out of the assassin, then lays down on the bed next to Bran. It’s a great scene and shows the companionship between the children and their pets.

8. Jon Snow trains Pip and Grenn

This scene is a turning point for Jon Snow, he arrives at the wall and begins to see what he has gotten himself into and it is not what he thought it would be. He doesn’t get off to a good start with his fellow new recruits as he thinks he deserves more as he is better than them. After being spoken to by Tyrion about what these other boys have lived through, Jon gets some perspective and decided to help the other boys out instead of beat them down in their sword training. This is the point where these boys turn from enemies to best friends, which they will need coming into season 2 and beyond.

7. Jon Snow protects Sam

Scary!

After Jon becomes the unofficial leader of his little band, a new recruit arrives in the form of fat, craven, Sam, a boy who has been sent to the wall by his father after he wasn’t deemed fit to inherit his lands. Now as you would expect, Sam is bullied by the other brothers, but Jon, Pip and Grenn don’t like this and take it upon themselves to make sure Sam isn’t hurt. The boys sneak into the barracks late one night and use Ghost, Jon’s Direwolf, to scare the other recruits into leaving Sam alone. It’s good to see that Jon is standing up for those who can’t stand up for themselves.

6. The Mountain kills Sir Hugh of the Vale

In celebration of Ned Stark’s appointment as Hand of the King, a tournament is held and in the opening joust, Sir Gregor Clegane, known as The Mountain, defeats Sir Hugh by stabbing his lance through his throat, Sir Hugh goes down, gargles and drowns in his own blood. A gruesome death, one that shows the brutal nature of The Mountain.

5. Tyrion saves Lady Stark

After taking Tyrion into custody for the attempted murder of Bran, Catelyn Stark and her band of men come under attack from the Mountain Tribes on their way to The Eyrie. In the battle as Catelyn is about to be killed by one of the men, Tyrion comes to her aid, bashing the man in the head before using the tip of the shield to stab the man’s face into a bloody wound. A great scene that shows size isn’t everything.

4. Ned Stark’s Beheading

Personally this is my most hated scene in the books and show, though it is well done here. Ned Stark was my favourite character in the series until his death here. With the death of King Robert, Joffrey comes into power and all hell breaks loose. He takes Ned into custody after he refuses to bend the knee to Joffrey and proceeds to behead Ned in The Great Sept of Baelor in front of a raging crowd. This is just one reason to hate Joffrey as you would all know.

3. Drogo gives Viserys a Golden Crown

My first kill of Drogo on the list, the aptly named episode The Golden Crown. After Drogo becomes sick of the way that Viserys acts and treats Dany, he has his bloodriders hold Viserys whilst he melts down his golden belt, once the belt is molten gold, he pours it over Viserys head, giving him a crown, not particularly the one he wanted. One of the coolest kills in the show, this one is a favourite scene from both the show and the book.

2. Drogo Tears out Mago’s Tongue

By far the coolest kill that Drogo does on the show this one. After Mago criticizes Dany and accuses Drogo of being a weak leader and bowing to a foreign woman, Drogo being the badass that he is decides to show Mago who he really is. Toying with him the entire fight, describing how he will treat his body once he is dead, Drogo finishes him off by slashing his throat and tearing out his tongue through the wound.

1. Tyrion Slaps Joffrey

Yes, it had to be number 1, everyone hates Joffrey and to see him get a nice bitch slap is a thing of beauty. After Bran is pushed out the window, Joffrey mouths off that he doesn’t care or want to give his wishes to the Stark family. Hearing this Tyrion tells him to go and give Lady Stark his best wishes, after he refuses, Tyrion continiously bitch slaps Joffrey until he does what he is told, by far the most satisfying moment in season 1.

So there you have it, my Top 10 moments from Game of Thrones season 1. Hope it gets you in the mood for season 2.

  1. Great post!

Personally, I could sit and watch Tyrion slapping Joffrey all day as it’s so fantastic. Never in a long time have I detested a character so much and with such ferocity.

  2. Beverly Mlaker says:

Love it! I dropped the book when I realized they actually were killed Lord Stark! Joffery what a super saddistic brat! (so much for inter-breeding) another mad king. This production is amazing and I can’t wait for more books, more TV, more DVDs, MORE!

    • Thanks for stopping by and reading the article. I’m glad you like it. I think I took a few weeks off reading the series after that, it was to much haha.
