‘The Avengers’ Review

I have to say that I haven’t had this much fun at the movies in a long time, this movie was a treat to watch, with good laughs, great action, good acting, the special effects were great, it was the complete package.

Note: Full Spoilers Ahead!

The movie tells the story of Loki, coming to Earth in order to steal the Tessaract, a cube of energy that Loki wants to use in order to open a portal and allow his army to conquer the Earth. As you might expect, this doesn’t go down to well. In steps Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D, bringing together the greatest heroes the Earth has to offer in order to defeat the invading army. Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk and Thor come together, not to easily at first, fighting amongst themselves for a good portion of the movie, this brings with it some great action scenes.

Eventually when a member of the S.H.I.E.L.D team dies, I won’t spoil that part for you, the team gets its act together and decides to fight as one. I was surprised to see that the movie flowed so well, with so many big names and characters to put into a film, it could have very easily turned into a complete mess, similar to SpiderMan 3, but Joss Whedon has managed to keep it together, giving all the characters some good screen time and managing to develop most of the characters to a point where you actually care if they live or die.

Not only does the movie flow well, it’s bloody good! The action is top-notch, with all these heroes in one movie you would expect something special and it doesn’t disappoint, there is some genuine moments where you think all our heroes might not make it out alive, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. The set pieces are great, and the actors do a great job of acting in this special effects heavy movie, making it look real when it could’ve looked very fake.

As a Whedon movie, you would expect a few laughs and he doesn’t disappoint in this respect either, The Hulk is surprisingly the funniest character in the movie, the theatre regularly cracked up laughing at The Hulk’s antics in the film, my personal favourite was when Thor and Hulk take down a massive enemy together and are standing side by side panting from near exhaustion when out of nowhere Hulk punches Thor through the wall, it is so random and hilarious, you just don’t expect it, which makes it all the more funny.

Robert Downey Jr is great once again as Iron Man, my personal favourite Avenger. His quick wit and arrogant attitude don’t get old at all in this movie and Iron Man has some of the best action scenes in the movie.

Another good thing about the movie is the human characters without any special powers or suits, like Black Widow and Hawkeye are believable, with all this power in one movie you would think that two people with no special powers might not do much, but the two are written in such a way that they contribute to the team in a good way and aren’t just there to be saved by the superheroes.

To be honest I can’t really think of many downsides to this movie, it does everything so well, if I had to nitpick something I would say that the invading army didn’t seem all that dangerous really, the odds never got so overwhelming that you didn’t think the team would come out on top, while I said there was sometimes where I thought the whole team wouldn’t make it out, all in all the most dangerous enemy was Loki himself. If I had to do anything different I would’ve stacked the odds higher against the Avengers, making the army more difficult to kill and less like cannon fodder.

I really hope there is many more Avengers movies to come as this was a great movie, one that could have been a disaster.

What did you guys think? Did the Avengers live up to the hype, or was it an epic fail? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. Like I said in my review, i think it very much lived up to the hype, and then some. It shone through as a example of how action movies should be, with not just action but story and laughs.
